Why this course?

Make a Meaningful Difference Every Day

Health and social care is one of the most important and fastest-growing sectors in the UK. With an ageing population, growing mental health needs, and an NHS that continues to evolve, the demand for skilled, compassionate professionals has never been higher. The HND in Health and Social Care Practice gives you the knowledge and the practical grounding to meet that demand head-on.

This programme does more than teach you theories — it trains you to think critically about care delivery, communicate sensitively with vulnerable individuals, and navigate complex ethical, legal, and safeguarding frameworks. You will study both health and social care contexts, gaining a genuinely broad perspective that makes you adaptable and employable across a range of settings: hospitals, care homes, community services, mental health teams, and charity organisations.

Completing the HND also opens a strong academic progression route. Graduates can advance to a BSc (Hons) Health, Wellbeing and Social Care Level 6 in one additional year, reaching degree level without starting again from scratch. AEC Consultant will map out your full pathway from the very first consultation.

"Compassion is the foundation of great care — but professional knowledge, ethical practice, and clinical skill are what make it sustainable. This programme builds all three."

Entry Requirements

Pathways to Admission

The HND in Health and Social Care Practice welcomes applicants from a wide range of backgrounds. Whether you are coming straight from college, returning to education after a career break, or transitioning from another sector, there is a pathway designed for you.

Standard Academic Entry

  • At least one A-Level (or equivalent Level 3 qualification such as a BTEC National, Access to HE Diploma, or T-Level in Health).
  • GCSE English Language and Mathematics at Grade 4/C or above, or Functional Skills Level 2 equivalent.
  • A Level 3 Health and Social Care, Childcare, or Science qualification is particularly relevant.

Work Experience & Professional Entry

Significant care sector experience is recognised as a valid route into the HND. If you have worked as a care worker, healthcare assistant, support worker, or in a related NHS or social services role, your professional background counts:

  • Care Experience: Typically 2+ years working directly with service users in health or social care environments.
  • Personal Statement: A reflective account of your care experience and what you hope to achieve from the programme.
  • Admissions Interview: A supportive conversation to explore your values, motivations, and readiness for higher-level study.

English Language

  • International applicants will typically require IELTS 5.5 (with no component below 5.5) or an approved equivalent.
AEC Consultant will review your full background — academic, professional, and personal — to identify the entry route best suited to you. All support is completely free.
Fees & Funding

Making Your Care Education Affordable

Pursuing a higher education qualification in health and social care should not be held back by financial barriers. As a UK-resident student, you are entitled to a comprehensive Student Finance England package that covers your tuition costs and helps support your day-to-day living throughout your studies.

Tuition Fee Loan

Eligible students can borrow up to £9,250 per year to cover their full tuition fees. This is paid directly to the institution, meaning you never need to find that sum yourself before enrolment.

Maintenance Loan

In addition to fee coverage, a Maintenance Loan of up to £13,348 per year is available to help with housing, food, and daily expenses. The exact amount is based on household income and where you are studying.

Repayment: Repayments begin only once you earn above £25,000 per year, at a rate of just 9% of income above that threshold. If your income ever drops below the threshold, repayments pause automatically.
